It was love at first sight. Saphire Estate’s Story
Roberta and Gerald Saphire were admiring the scenery as they drove along Lake Massapoag that day in 1977, when something up the small hill on the other side of the street caught their eye. There it was, the place of their dreams: a turn-of-the-century property called Daub’s Highland Manor.
Originally known as Wentworth’s, then Anapolsky’s, the Manor had been built to accommodate the vacationers, tourists, and celebrities who flocked to the area during summer season. Legend had it that in the 1930’s, the great Leonard Bernstein used to perform in the Manor’s grand ballroom. Roberta and Gerald bought the property, renaming it the Saphire Manor and Inn. Soon, they would turn into one of the South Shore’s premier event venues.
In May, 2006, their son Jonathan and his wife Amie took over ownership of the property. They invested nearly one million dollars to remodel the house and gardens, retaining its historic charm, while incorporating the latest in appointments and amenities. Relaunched as Saphire Estate, the property has entered a new era of glory as the setting for weddings, receptions, corporate events, fund raising galas, and special celebrations. It has become renowned throughout the southeastern Massachusetts area as the venue that offers endless possibilities to those with discerning tastes.
Where dreams come true. The Villa’s Story
When his family stopped working their 250-acre dairy farm, just 30 miles south of Boston, Jon Ridder knew it was time to pursue his dream. Working with notable landscape architects, Henry Holhman and Geoff Cornish, he began converting the lush, green property into a challenging 18-hole public golf course. At its heart was the barn his family built in 1918, which he turned into the clubhouse.
For 40 years that clubhouse, nestled amidst over 250 acres of perfectly manicured lawns and woodlands, was one of Plymouth County’s most exclusive private event venues, hosting thousands of weddings, outings, and special occasions.
In 2008, Jonathan and Amie Saphire took over the clubhouse and set about transforming it into their dream setting: a sophisticated Mediterranean-inspired events venue for weddings, receptions, fund raising galas, corporate events, and other celebrations. Today, The Villa provides an unrivaled location in southeastern Massachusetts, offering dramatic spaces, elegant appointments, the most up-to-date amenities, and endless possibilities for those who wish to create the event of their dreams.
